Our Sacred History & Heritage
The Journey of the Legendary “Tin Top Church”
A Pillar of New Orleans Black Baptist History
Few churches in the Crescent City hold a history as enduring and resilient as First Zion Baptist Church. Rising from humble origins beneath a corrugated tin roof at the corners of Liberty and Lafayette streets, the congregation has endured floods, storms, societal transformations, and generational milestones—all through the unshakeable grace of God.
Milestones of Faith
Organization of the 'Tin Top Church'
The late Reverend Stevens Bryant, together with a few devoted and faithful Liberty Street members, organized what was affectionately named the 'Tin Top Church'. Situated on the bustling corners of Liberty and Lafayette streets in New Orleans, this small congregation was founded upon prayer, perseverance, and deep faith in God during post-Reconstruction times.
Reverend Folsom & Reverend Thomas Columbus
Succeeding the late Reverend Bryant was the late Reverend Folsom, who pastored and nurtured the flock through challenging times. When leadership passed next, the late Reverend Thomas Columbus assumed the mantle, strengthening fellowship, worship, and Sunday education.
Reverend E.B. Fisher's Decades of Service
The late Reverend E.B. Fisher was called and elected pastor, serving the 'Tin Top Church' faithfully for many historic years. His steady leadership saw the congregation grow in both membership and community influence across Greater New Orleans.
Pastor Dr. Donald Ray Berryhill, Sr. & Olive Street
Today, under the pastoral guidance of Dr. Donald Ray Berryhill, Sr., First Zion Baptist Church stands as a sanctuary of hope at 7201 Olive Street. The church continues to honor its sacred New Orleans heritage while expanding into digital ministry, international streaming, youth mentoring, and community benevolence.
